Ketoconazole is a medicine that is used to prevent the growth of certain types of fungi.
Ketoconazole is available by the doctor’s prescription. It comes in dosages and preparations:
200 mg (tablets), 1 and 2% (shampoo), 2% (cream), 2% (gel), 2% (foam).
Oral form of Ketoconazole is used in treatment of such fungal infections as coccidiomycosis, blastomycosis, candidiasis of the skin and mouth and some others. Topical form of Ketoconazole is intended for dermatomycosis, eczema marginatum, athlete’s foot, pityriasis versicolo, and dandruff treatment.
The dose of an oral form of the medication is 200-400 mg per day. Topical Ketoconazole is applied to affected areas once or twice a day.
Ketoconazole in tablet form require stomach acidity to be dissolved that’s why this medication should be taken at least two hours before taking any acid reducing drugs. Don’t consume alcohol when treating with Ketoconazole as it may cause certain unfavourable reactions.
Rifampin medication reduces the concentration of Ketoconazole in blood that may negatively effect on the action of Ketoconazole.
Ketoconazole medication may increase the amount of anticoagulant Warfarin in blood by decreasing its elimination which can lead to the increase of this medication, resulting in a high tendency to bleed.
Besides, Ketoconazole increases the concentration of phenytoin, zidovudine, theophylline, tolbutamide, glyburide, glipizide, protease inhibitors and other drugs. As a rule, increased drug concentrations increase the possibility of side reactions.
